The ultimate jig rig? Shimano engineering wizardry has been able to place Tiagra-like gear and drag performance in a casting size reel. The most remarkable feature of the Torsa is the Rapid Fire Quick Change Drag Cam System. The cam is what determines the amount of drag and how quickly it comes on as the drag lever is pushed forward, but with the Torsa series there are eight completely interchangeable cams available as after-market fittings to suit your style of fishing. For instance, the LRS cam is suited for use with heavy braid for jigging, there's another ideal for casting baits and lures, another for ultra light line class record chasing, one perfectly matched to cranking up big fish and heavy weights when bottom fishing and so on. The changeover is performed by screwing out the preset knob, is completely tool-free and takes only seconds to perform.
Other features of note include High Efficiency Gears (the largest gears ever put into a Shimano reel), which are also the most powerful gears on any casting reel in the world. Eight of Shimano's patented A-RB bearings and one roller bearing means that winding is also delightfully smooth and resistance free. There are four other Torsas to choose from and, given that these reels will be spooled with all manner of different types and breaking strains of line, as a rough guide to capacities the TS16N has a capacity of 300 yards of 14 pound nylon, the TS16 450 yards of 16 pound, the TS20 420 yards of 20 pound and the TN30 350 yards of 30 pound.
All four have a retrieve speed of 5.8:1, which is plenty fast enough for jigging, casting and trolling, and each reel recovers a massive 43 inches of line with each turn of the handle. An intricately machined spool design has low startup inertia and the spool lip on the sideplate side has a lip for comfortable thumbing during the cast.
The Variable Brake System (VBS) all but eliminates overruns. Understandably, these reels are not cheap, but for an angler who demands the absolute very best in bluewater overhead casting reel performance, there's simply no other reel to make.
