This Months Top Tips from Joe Dennehy
Winter is here a month early, there's no point moaning about it, get stuck in to winter fishing mode.
Tarakihi fishing is starting to fire up on the east coast, target these delicious fish with braid line and small sharp 1/0 hooks baited with shellfish. They will take squid and they have been caught on Pilchard and Bonito.
Snapper are headed out into deeper water; last weekend we found them with the sounder at Coromandel in 20 to 25 metres, and fired the baits straight down . In a couple of weeks it will be big moocher time, the big resident snapper seem to be able to withstand the lower temperatures; use plenty of burley, be patient and big messy baits, like a whole butterflied jack mackerel or half a bonito head work well.
There will be lots of 20 lb trophy snapper caught this winter so why not you?
There are tons of Kingfish around at the moment, and Jigging is working well, as is casting poppers around channel marker buoys, piles etc. Livebaiting by either slow trolling a Kahawai, or swimming a Kahawai under a balloon has been producing good results, all of the above need the right equipment, see your Top Catch tackle store for advice.
Last but not least its Hapuku time, I don’t think that there is a better eating fish than fresh Hapuku, they are found on both coasts in water 300 metres plus, but do start to come into shallower water from Autumn onwards. We caught 5 Hapuku, two on softbaits in 85 metres of water, off Great Barrier on a trip aboard Assassin recently, nothing huge, the biggest was around 20 pounds, Jason from Top Catch reckoned that they would be good bait fish for “Proper Hapuku” on the West Coast, and after Brett the skipper steaked them, two steaks cooked up at 11pm fed four of us in royal style. Whole squid, whole small fish, or stripbaits work well, but like Kingfish and big snapper they will happily take a jig, or a softbait, so get stuck in, the fishing is great.
Top Catch carries a full range of all the major fishing tackle brands including Shimano, Penn, Berkley, Daiwa, Avet, Abu Garcia, Okuma, Gamakatsu, Black Magic, Rapala, Zest & Gulp to name but a few. If it is conventional fishing you are into no one in New Zealand carries a wider range of baits and berleys in store than Top Catch and our range of Gulp and other soft baits, jig heads, braids is huge.
